The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has completed a significant hatchery infrastructure improvement which is expected to benefit the Lake Champlain salmon population for years to come.

A fish trap was recently installed in Hatchery Brook – the discharge stream for the state’s Ed Weed Fish Culture Station in Grand Isle.

The new infrastructure will allow department officials to more efficiently and safely collect adult salmon to be used to provide fertilized eggs for the state’s hatchery system.

It will also enable staff to more efficiently evaluate the state’s salmon restoration efforts, and will serve as a public education tool.
